Today’s makeup + Summer makeup wishlist

These are the products I brushed, poked and smeared on my face today to look more like a human and less like Bruce Jenner.

From left to right: Urban Decay Naked 3 Palette, Urban Decay Naked Skin Foundation in 4.0, Benefit The POREfessional, Make Up For Ever Full Cover Concealer in 5, Urban Decay 24/7 Velvet Liner in Black Velvet, OFRA Eyebrow Pencil in Universal, NARS Pro-Prime Eyeshadow Base, Maybelline Rocket Mascara, Anastasia Clear Brow Gel, NYX Butter Gloss in 02 Eclair, Benefit Fake Up Concealer, Milani Baked Blush in Luminoso, Make Up For Ever HD Pressed Powder

My makeup collection needs a desperate upgrade. My concealer is too thick and feels heavy on my face. My foundation is nearly empty, and I would like to double my skin protection by switching to a tinted moisturizer with SPF. I’m torn between NARS and Jouer. I also have my eye on the Marc Jacobs under eye concealer simply because of the cool metal tip. The bags under my eyes are not Prada, they’re Coach knock-offs.

Today’s makeup

If I stumbled upon a magic lamp and a giant shirtless genie wearing better accessories than me offered three wishes, I can guarantee that one of them would be for my lipstick to last on my lips.

This beautiful color from Covergirl lasted my commute to work and halfway through breakfast, but its pigment was shed all over my fork and the back of a sandpaper napkin by the time I was done. And who left the tube at home? Me. I did.

From left to right: NARS Duo in Cordura, Urban Decay Naked 3 Palette, Covergirl Lipstick in 360 Euphoria, Urban Decay Naked Basics Palette

This isn’t all I wore on my face, but I am in desperate need of a new foundation and powder that I just decided to leave my basics out.

What is your makeup faux pas? Do you have any solutions for my lipstick problem?

Today’s makeup

Unfortunately, none of these products are on my face anymore because something is in my left eye and I have been clawing at my eyeball to get it out. Why.

A few standouts from today, notably my new Urban Decay Velvet Pencil I received in my newest Ipsy bag. Urban Decay eyeliners are awesome, but the texture of this liner is perfect for my needs. I don’t use liquid eyeliner and prefer a smudged eyeliner look over a cat eye. Seriously, a cat eye makes me look like a chola. Give me a plaid shirt and some lip liner and I turn into a straight up Mexican gangsta.

Not pictured: Urban Decay Naked Skin Foundation

I Instagram’d a rare selfie of today’s look:

Today’s makeup

Shimmery nude eye and coral lips. Le swoon.

From left to right: Urban Decay Naked Skin Foundation in 4.0, Benefit POREfessional, NARS Pro-Prime Eyeshadow Base, Arbonne Mascara, Anastasia Brow Gel, Starlooks Eyeliner in Obsidian, Benefit Fake Up Concealer in 02 Medium, Revlon Lipstick in Coralberry, Urban Decay Naked 2 Palette

I’ve never really liked bright lips and usually opt for nude colors. I’ve noticed a lot of women with my complexion wearing coral/orange lipstick and loved how well it looked against their skin.

2

This is my first Revlon lipstick and definitely not my last. I’ve been using their chubby sticks, but this lipstick lasts longer on my lips and is extremely pigmented. I lick my lips constantly, so kudos to Revlon being able to create a product that can withstand the wrath of my spit.

I’m also super in love with this Benefit concealer sample. I used my Sephora discount to get the set that came with POREfessional and this product because I was intrigued by the layer of balm that surrounds the concealer.

3

I’ve used quite a few under eye concealers, but holy crap, I have found my favorite. It just glides. It’s nourishing. I want to have its babies. It lasted all day, and part of that is in thanks to POREfessional. I don’t know why I ever had my doubts about you, Benefit. I think it’s the packaging. I usually like the professional black or gold packaging as opposed to cute graphics. I don’t care now because Benefit has won my heart. And my money.

What did you get with the Sephora discount?

Gold and rose

I attended the HAHMP gala, which awards scholarships to Hispanic students in Houston. It was one of the many perks of working at my new job. I rarely attend formal events, so I had the pleasure of putting a spring evening look together since I knew a majority of people would be dressed in black. I was right.

Dress: Ruche
Cardigan: Target
Shoes: Payless
Necklace: Forever 21

I instantly fell in love with this dress when I saw it online. I regularly browse Ruche’s new arrivals section and have had this dress sitting in my wishlist, unsure of when I would ever buy it. I’m glad I did because the soft pink stood out among the sea of black and red and made me feel radiant.

As for makeup, I found my well-loved yet somehow recently neglected Chanel eyeshadow in Emerveille. This is another recommendation from Missglamorazzi (can you tell that I love her?) and I’m so surprised it made its way out of my rotation. I broke up the shadow so that it can be used as a pigment, its creamy texture allowing me to dab it on with my finger.

I also have very sad news to share with you all. My Urban Decay lipstick in Naked, as shown above, BROKE. Its poor little neck snapped in half and I had an emotional breakdown minutes before leaving for the gala. This is my favorite lipstick, and though it was near the end of its life, it was taken from this world too soon. I am in need of a speedy replacement during this time of mourning.

Good thing there’s a Sephora 15% off sale going on right now. Aw yiss.

Have a great Sunday and thank you for reading.

Sephora wishlist

If you’re a makeup obsessed Sephora VIB like me, then you must have totally freaked out when you received the VIB 15% off early access event email. I have a handsome list of products I have been wanting to smear on my face, so best believe I am using this discount.

Sephora Needs

From left to right:
Fresh Soy Face Cleanser
Benefit The POREfessional
Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara
Tarte Amazonian Clay Airbrush Foundation
Tarte Airbuki Foundation Brush

I tried a sample of the Soy Face Cleanser and was impressed by how much makeup it removed even after I had used eye makeup remover and a makeup wipe. It didn’t dry out my face, and had a light cucumber scent.

The POREfessional, Tarte foundation and brush and Too Faced mascara have been highly recommended on YouTube, so naturally, I’m curious.

If you’re a VIB and haven’t received the email, use the code VIBTICKET on online purchases between April 3 – April 11, 2014.

What’s on your beauty wishlist?

Disappointing products

A lot of beauty bloggers say, “I don’t like to write about products that didn’t work for me because it seems too negative.” However, I enjoy finding out what didn’t work for someone, especially if it’s a popular product, or expensive.

I’ve compiled several products that have been a complete miss for me, but I bought because of the brand or from recommendations on YouTube and other beauty blogs.

Just for reference, I have oily/combination skin, drink plenty of water and keep my nails relatively short, in relation to the products listed below.

1

Essie Millionails Treatment $10

I bought this treatment because I was destroying my nails from not wearing a base coat before painting them. If anything, this treatment made it worse. It stripped the top layer of my nail starting at the tip, and I was able to peel the rest of my nail off after I removed the treatment. My nails grew faster after a few treatments, but it didn’t matter because I had lost the top layer of nail, which revealed a gritty texture and repelled polish.

6

Smashbox Photo Finish Dark Spot Correcting Primer $42

This primer dries extremely fast and makes it difficult to blend my makeup. I used it often when I first bought it and have included it in several makeup posts hoping it would fade my dark spots from acne. I still have the same dark spots, and after reading other’s reviews, I’m convinced it is partly responsible for the breakouts I’ve had along my jawline. It also smells like Elmer’s Glue. Not cute.

4

Nivea Lip Butter in Vanilla & Macadamia Kiss $2.99

I wanted to love this because it was highly recommended by a lot of my favorite beauty vloggers, including Ingrid Nilsen (Missglamorazzi). I’ve been carrying it around in my purse for the past few months, but I’m starting to bypass it and reach for my Baby Lips instead. It leaves a milky residue on my lips, and keeps them hydrated for about 10 minutes. I won’t be too hard on it because it’s fairly cheap, but I expected more because of all the hype.

2

Urban Decay Primer Potion in Sin $20

Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the shade of this primer. Sin is my favorite UD eyeshadow color, so I was ecstatic when this came out. I just don’t like UD primers, but I really think my oily eyelids are the one to blame. Eyeshadow slips off my eyelids like an ice cream scoop off a cone on a hot day. It’s gross. The NARS Pro-Prime is the only eyeshadow primer I trust, and this one went from being an awesome double-duty product, to a minimally used eyeshadow shade.

3

NARS Pencil Sharpener $6

You let me down, NARS. Every time I reach for this little tool I always think, “I should have bought the Urban Decay Grindhouse.” And I should have. This sharpener has ruined 80% of my eyeliners, and has an unbreakable prejudice towards drug store liners. I’ve sent it to self-help meetings and several workshops, but it remains convinced that anything that costs less than $10 is not worth its time.

What products have you tried that completely let you down or betrayed your trust? I’m still coping.

Have a great Thursday and thank you for reading.
