Disappointing products

A lot of beauty bloggers say, “I don’t like to write about products that didn’t work for me because it seems too negative.” However, I enjoy finding out what didn’t work for someone, especially if it’s a popular product, or expensive.

I’ve compiled several products that have been a complete miss for me, but I bought because of the brand or from recommendations on YouTube and other beauty blogs.

Just for reference, I have oily/combination skin, drink plenty of water and keep my nails relatively short, in relation to the products listed below.

Essie Millionails Treatment $10

I bought this treatment because I was destroying my nails from not wearing a base coat before painting them. If anything, this treatment made it worse. It stripped the top layer of my nail starting at the tip, and I was able to peel the rest of my nail off after I removed the treatment. My nails grew faster after a few treatments, but it didn’t matter because I had lost the top layer of nail, which revealed a gritty texture and repelled polish.

Smashbox Photo Finish Dark Spot Correcting Primer $42

This primer dries extremely fast and makes it difficult to blend my makeup. I used it often when I first bought it and have included it in several makeup posts hoping it would fade my dark spots from acne. I still have the same dark spots, and after reading other’s reviews, I’m convinced it is partly responsible for the breakouts I’ve had along my jawline. It also smells like Elmer’s Glue. Not cute.

Nivea Lip Butter in Vanilla & Macadamia Kiss $2.99

I wanted to love this because it was highly recommended by a lot of my favorite beauty vloggers, including Ingrid Nilsen (Missglamorazzi). I’ve been carrying it around in my purse for the past few months, but I’m starting to bypass it and reach for my Baby Lips instead. It leaves a milky residue on my lips, and keeps them hydrated for about 10 minutes. I won’t be too hard on it because it’s fairly cheap, but I expected more because of all the hype.

Urban Decay Primer Potion in Sin $20

Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the shade of this primer. Sin is my favorite UD eyeshadow color, so I was ecstatic when this came out. I just don’t like UD primers, but I really think my oily eyelids are the one to blame. Eyeshadow slips off my eyelids like an ice cream scoop off a cone on a hot day. It’s gross. The NARS Pro-Prime is the only eyeshadow primer I trust, and this one went from being an awesome double-duty product, to a minimally used eyeshadow shade.

NARS Pencil Sharpener $6

You let me down, NARS. Every time I reach for this little tool I always think, “I should have bought the Urban Decay Grindhouse.” And I should have. This sharpener has ruined 80% of my eyeliners, and has an unbreakable prejudice towards drug store liners. I’ve sent it to self-help meetings and several workshops, but it remains convinced that anything that costs less than $10 is not worth its time.

What products have you tried that completely let you down or betrayed your trust? I’m still coping.

Have a great Thursday and thank you for reading.
