Street plaid

I was one of the few students at my Catholic school who actually liked their uniform. I liked it so much that I would lounge around in it after school, my legs propped up on the armrest of the couch while watching Nickelodeon. My mom would get home after 5 and ask why I still had it on. I thought it was cute.

I think it’s difficult for women past the age of 20 to wear a plaid skirt without looking like a delusional wannabe schoolgirl or like you just got back from a My Chemical Romance concert.

RIP MCR.

Jacket: American Eagle (similar)
Top: Target
Skirt: H&M
Flats: ALDO
Rings: Forever 21

I think the large pleats and subtle plaid on this skirt has the right amount of maturity for my age and style. A satin top with a high neckline (no plunging white button ups here) and pointy flats creates a wearable girly grunge look, which speaks to Catholic school girl Leah.

And when all else fails, I can just throw on some combat boots and trot off to a Babymetal concert. Death to 25.

Stay out all day

Dark layers make me happy.

I wore these boots a lot last fall/winter, and I refuse to let them go. I like the idea of having a capsule wardrobe with pieces that last for years and are always in style. The straps across the front and hint of gold hardware on the back make it a perfect, sensible-yet-interesting boot.

I bought this jacket near the end of spring this year so I’m happy that it will now get to be worn through the cold season. It’s also great at making it look like you’re a car thief, because a concerned woman came out to question why I was standing so near her car while taking these photos. As if Houston thieves wear jeggings. Please.

Whoa whoa whoa

Feeling like a badass today in my fake leather jacket while listening to Watsky’s new song. Seriously, it’s amazing.

I used to wear a lot of black in high school and college, and I miss it sometimes. I could never go back to jeans, converse and band tees as my day-to-day wear, but I like to experiment by adding an edge to my style that’s still age appropriate. I have my eye on a few ear cuffs and a black maxi skirt to mix in to my vomit of floral dresses and skater skirts.

But no one could ever take away my Incubus t-shirts and beloved star tattoo. No one.

Keep it real.

I’ve been looking forward to layering my peplum tops over full skirts. The thin cotton material in this shirt takes the shapes of the subtle pleats in the skirt when it lays over it. It gives the illusion of a dress with a thick white hem. I paired it with my leather jacket since it’s still a little chilly despite the Houston sun. This look is very Wendy inspired, a person whom I admire and take fashion cues from often. Also, I totally fangirled when she responded to and retweeted one of my tweets last week. Yes, thank you, thank you.

Have a great Tuesday and thank you for reading.

Summer sets in

When I first created this blog, I had a vision of writing posts in the early morning with a cup of coffee in hand. It’s nice to see myself fulfilling that vision this morning, with the addition of Kings of Convenience playing in the background, a new favorite of mine.

I’ve been on the hunt for a leather jacket since fall. I wanted something lightweight enough to wear in the spring, and simple enough to be a staple piece.

I’ve been admiring this vegan leather jacket from American Eagle since it came out in their fall 2013 collection. It was always a bit out of my price range, so when it went on sale and AE offered an additional 25% off sale items, I jumped at the opportunity.

I love the quilted detail on the pockets, and the cut on the neckline makes it look tough while the slightly cropped fitted shape is feminine and perfect for dresses and skirts.

I paired the jacket with a white lace dress and a necklace that has a similar metal finish as the hardware on the jacket. I also fixed my one-size-too-big wedges by purchasing heel inserts by Fab Feet. I was skeptical at first because they aren’t very thick and there is still a visible space between my heel and the back of the shoe, as seen in my photo. However, the inserts work wonderfully! They noticeably stopped my heel from slipping out of my shoe after walking around for hours. I am very impressed.

What are your favorite staple pieces in your closet?

Have a great Sunday and thank you for reading.
